The Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless is working closely with government officials and homeless service providers to help prevent the transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19) among individuals experiencing homelessness in our community. Here are some of the things we’re doing:
- Our Street Outreach Team is meeting with clients in a tent that has been set up in the DFCS parking lot, and they are also delivering donations to the shelters around town.
- We continue to work with the City/CEMA/County/Memorial and have made adjustments to our client intake process to screen for COVID-19 before making referrals to shelter beds.
- We are in the process of setting up an Overflow Emergency Shelter, a Quarantine Space for those diagnosed positive, and a Waiting Space for those suspected as positive.
- You may have seen in the news that a few food provider sites have recently closed, so we are working to get meals in place for our clients.
- Our office telephone has become a 24-7 hotline for persons experiencing homelessness and others seeking information.
STAYING SAFE FROM THE CORONAVIRUS
There are many things you can do to prevent getting sick from the coronavirus, whether you are housed or homeless. For the most up-to-date information on staying safe, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
HOW TO ACCESS SERVICES
There are many services available to help people experiencing homelessness in Chatham County. If you are experiencing homelessness and need services such as food or shelter, please call 912-790-3400 and leave a message. Staff are checking messages 7 days a week. We will return your call quickly and help you find the services you need. You may also stop by the parking lot tent at 761 Wheaton Street in Savannah Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
